Poaching

Each year more and more animals are killed and sold on the black market. We need to find a way to stop this from happening. No only is it illegal but it is killing off the animal population. We need to stop this as soon as we can. I believe that if this keeps up then more and more animals are going to become extinct.

  1. What types of animals is this happening to? Is there anyway to watch the animals and protect them?

  2. Which animals are most commonly caught and sold on the black market? How can we prevent it, is there anybody trying to patrol and regulate this black market?

  3. Is there we can get someone out there to watch the animals so they dont get caught? and if they do those people could help them as much as they can do to rescue the animals, and arrest the person selling them in the black markets

  4. This makes it very hard to maintain animal populations that are already endangered. Many poachers go for animals that are on the endangered or threatened list because these animals are the ones that have materials that sell for a big price on the black market.

  5. To Katrina: Some of the bigger animals that are being poached are elephants, tigers, lion, and some small ones are like deer, moose, and bear. Anything that is shot illegally is being poached. Some ways they are stopping this is by making robotic decoy animals to trick people and get them to shot at it and if they do and there not suppose to they can arrest them.

  6. To Kristin: The most common are small animals like turtles, birds, monkeys, and animals like that. Then also bigger animals like tigers, lions, elephants, gorillas and such are sold for their furs. The only way to prevent this from happening is to catch someone in the action of selling these animals.

  7. I agree that poaching needs to be stop as soon as possible. I read on the online Britannica, that animals in Africa are a huge target to poaching. It was mentioned that the African government has created "wildlife sanctuaries" to keep animals safe from poaching. Are there any other places where similar ideas are taking place?

  8. To Ashlee: We have people out there watching animals such as game wardens, and animal patrol. You cant watch every animal all the time so people are going to find ways to cheat the system.

  9. I agree with mason, poaching just causes more problems for the already endangered animals.

  10. Do most countries have enforcement units dedicated to exposing poachers? In Sumatra, they have set up an Intelligence and Law Enforcement Unit with the International Rhino Foundation (IRF) because poaching poses one of the biggest threats to the country's wildlife. The Sumatran rhino, Dicerorhinus sumatrensis, is particularly important because it is the most endangered species in the region. Employees of the LEU believe that the punishments and consequences for poaching are not harsh enough. Is that true in the US too? Do we need tougher laws?

  11. Do you have any ideas on how to stop the smuggling?

  12. It is really sad that these smuggled/poached animals are treated so inhumanely. But, what as Americans can we really do to stop such a problem so many miles away? We probably buy a large percentage of these illegal animals so, maybe tougher laws on buying black market animals?

  13. Animals are becoming extinct from poaching and I don't think we are doing enough to stop it. If an animal goes extinct then it messes up the whole ecosystem. I bet we buy stuff from the black market without even knowing it!?
